Saddle making is an important industry in India, established over
many centuries, and is a traditional craft which probably goes back further in history than it does in Britain.
Good saddles were a necessity for the Indian military - remember the famous Bengal Lancers - and also for racing and other equestrian sports.
The ever popular sport of Polo - played, for example, on Windsor Lawn and at Cowdray Park - was actually invented in India and not, as is
sometimes thought, in England.
During the height of the Raj, when most of India was part of the British Empire, polo became one of the most popular pastimes of the more
wealthy among the British. Some Indian words from that era became part of the English language, such as jodhpur, numnha and gymkhana.
The British in India insisted on the best saddles for all their military and sporting activities and this formed the basis of the Indian
tradition of making "English" saddles to meet a high specification demand. It has continued to this day.
 Our range of 10 English saddles are hand made from good quality, carefully selected leather,
cut and stitched by our manufacturers. They are a family run business who employ craftsmen who often have a family history themselves in
saddle making from the days of The Raj and before.
They are based in Chandigarh, the modern capital of the Punjab, which has strict labour laws banning the employment of children and
legislation on working conditions and hours, safety at work, and equal opportunities and pay for both sexes.
The measurements of our jumping, dressage and all purpose saddles conform with standard English measurements, from 15 inches to 19 inches.
We can also supply bespoke saddles made to your exact specification.
The leather is from the unmarked hides of humanely slaughtered Indian cattle, There are choices of black, tan and dark brown which are DD or
drum dyed leather, and the lighter brown and slightly more supple but thinner leather is VT or vegetable dyed.
